Need to know how to get a TxTag in Texas?
In a MAJOR update for Texas toll road users, TxTag, once operated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), has shifted its customer-facing operations to the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) as of November 9, 2024.
This transition impacts approximately 3 million TxTag users, with HCTRA now overseeing toll collection, billing, and customer service for TxDOT-managed toll roads in regions like Austin and Houston.
The change stems from a push to enhance service quality, tackling persistent TxTag billing frustrations by tapping into HCTRA’s 40 years of toll management experience.
For users, this means existing TxTag accounts in good standing have been seamlessly transferred to HCTRA’s system, accessible via hctra.org rather than the old txtag.org site. Drivers can still use their TxTag stickers on toll roads across Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas without interruption.
Meanwhile, TxDOT continues to own the toll roads and set rates, maintaining oversight while HCTRA handles day-to-day operations, aiming to streamline the experience for millions of Texas drivers.
