Who Is “Dis Dey” Jasmine Crockett? Unmasking the Congresswoman’s “Dey Is” Rhetoric and Disability Controversies

In the rough-and-tumble arena of Texas politics, U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has carved out a reputation as a firebrand with a penchant for polarizing soundbites. From her “dey is” rants to her biting attacks on opponents, Crockett’s style has sparked both admiration and outrage.

But who is “dis dey” Jasmine “Dey” Crockett, as critics mockingly call her? Is she the bold voice of a new generation or, as detractors claim, “all hat and no cattle”?

We rip into her controversial rhetoric, from Ebonics-laden speeches to alleged ableist jabs, including her mockery of Gov. Greg Abbott’s disability and wishing Donald Trump’s hand would “fall off.”

We’ve got the tweets, videos, and receipts to show why her words are lighting up Texas—and Google. Let’s dive in.

The Education vs. the Ebonics: A Tale of Two Crocketts

Jasmine Felicia Crockett, born in St. Louis in 1981, boasts a resume that screams sophistication. She graduated from the prestigious Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School, earned a B.A. in Business Administration from Rhodes College, and secured a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center. As a licensed Texas attorney, she’s worked in criminal defense and civil rights advocacy.

This is the profile of a polished professional, not a street-corner preacher. Yet, Crockett’s public persona often leans into African American Vernacular English (AAVE), or “Ebonics,” with phrases like “dey is” and “dem people.”

In a viral clip, she declared: “Baby, cuz deez people, day are crazy, because they always talking bout how Christian dey is, yet I don’t know how many dem on dat side are getting divorced cuz they gettin’ caught up sleepin’ with they coworkers, staffers, interns, all the things.”

Critics call it a calculated code-switch, pointing to her pre-Congress speeches, which were crisp and professional. One X user snarked, “Her code-switch button is stuck on ‘dey is’ mode.” Supporters argue it’s authentic cultural expression, but skeptics see it as pandering to specific crowds, a far cry from her law school days.

Crossing the Line: Mocking Disabilities and Health

Crockett’s sharp tongue has landed her in deep trouble, particularly over remarks perceived as ableist. In March 2025, at a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles, she called Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “Governor Hot Wheels,” a jab at his use of a wheelchair following a 1984 accident that left him paralyzed.

The comment ignited a firestorm. Disability advocates, and even some Democrats, slammed it as “cruel” and “unacceptable.” Crockett doubled down, claiming it targeted Abbott’s policies, not his disability, citing his migrant busing tactics as a “hot mess.” But the damage was done. ABC’s “The View” hosts called it out, with one saying, “You don’t mock someone’s disability, period.”

Abbott clapped back: “They have nothing to sell but hate.” Republicans pushed for her censure in Congress. More recently, Crockett took aim at President Donald Trump’s health on the “Grounded” podcast, joking, “Donald Trump’s hand looks like it’s about to fall off.” Laughing and clapping, she contrasted Trump’s appearance with Joe Biden’s past health struggles, prompting accusations of hypocrisy and ableism. One X post nailed it: “The same people who swore Biden was fit are now making up stuff about Trump’s health. Crockett’s at it again.

The X-Factor: Tweets and Videos Fuel the Fire

Social media has turned Crockett’s gaffes into viral fodder. Here are key X posts capturing the backlash:

All Hat, No Cattle? Texas Watches Closely

Crockett’s defenders celebrate her as a fierce advocate for civil rights and DEI, arguing her style resonates with marginalized communities. But her critics, especially in Texas, see a disconnect between her elite education and “dey is” persona, calling it a calculated act.

Her jabs at Abbott and Trump, paired with unsubstantiated claims, fuel accusations of “nasty mouth” lies and hate. In a state that values authenticity, the “all hat and no cattle” label stings.

As Crockett eyes bigger roles, her rhetoric could make or break her. Is she a progressive powerhouse or an “accent-changing fool” sowing division?
