Last updated September 7, 2026. The Paxton vs Talarico toss-up is real. Cook Political Report moved Texas to toss-up on August 20. Sabato followed. Polls sit inside a point. Texas still has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994. Midterms reward people who already vote. That is Ken Paxton’s path through the Paxton vs Talarico toss-up.

Why the Paxton vs Talarico toss-up exists
Ken Paxton beat John Cornyn on May 26. James Talarico is the Democrat. Election Day is November 3. MAGA Inc put $10 million in on September 5. Dallas hosts the first Republican midterm convention September 9–10.
University of Texas registered voters in August: Talarico 42, Paxton 39, 14 percent no preference. Emerson likely voters: Paxton 47–46. Overton with leaners: 50–50. A Paxton vs Talarico toss-up this tight is not a Talarico lock. It is a race that turns on who is still unmarked.
Who can break the Paxton vs Talarico toss-up
Soft Republicans. Talarico already has the Democratic base. Paxton does not yet have all of his. The UT survey had Paxton at 79 percent of Republicans. Weak Republicans were 54 percent Paxton and 29 percent unmarked. Fox found 24 percent of non-MAGA Republicans with Talarico. If those voters come home after Dallas, the Paxton vs Talarico toss-up moves toward Paxton first.
Independents with no pick. Talarico leads named independents. In the UT poll, 43 percent of independents still had no preference. Independents cannot beat a united Texas GOP by themselves. They can keep the Paxton vs Talarico toss-up alive if Paxton never closes.
Latino midterm turnout. Several polls show Talarico ahead with Hispanic voters after Donald Trump split that group in Texas in 2024. Preference is not turnout. Presidential-only voters often skip November. If they skip, Paxton’s older and rural share grows. That is how a Paxton vs Talarico toss-up can flip without any headline conversion.
Suburban women. Women break toward Talarico. Men break toward Paxton. Paxton does not need a blowout with suburban women. He needs to keep Collin, Fort Bend, Williamson, and the Houston suburbs from running away.
Voters who always show up. Talarico runs best under 30. Paxton runs best at 65 and older, with men, rural counties, and white evangelical voters. Rural Texas already gave Paxton 55–26 in the UT survey. Those groups vote in midterms. That floor is the Republican side of the Paxton vs Talarico toss-up.
